I Am Not My Brother's Keeper by Amelia Bradford

This is a true story about children hurt by their own parents. It's about not doing the easy thing, the common thing, and turning away, and it's about the long, hard, expensive fight to do what's right. It's a success story, too, (if that's the right phrase) about a family torn apart, about parents prosecuted, convicted and jailed and children given another chance. It's the story of a flawed justice system that, for all its errors, all its faults, in this case, did what we hope it will. It's about what the words - family, love and responsibility - really mean, and, most of all, it's an example for those of us who care about kids enough to do more than talk about it.

Cross-Over Murders by Frank Atanacio

Nick PT Barnum is back, and this is the best Barnum book yet! When illegal aliens are taking over our union jobs..someone is out for revenge. Something sinister is about to happen and the City of Bridgeport is in for a killing spree it would never forget. In comes Nick Barnum who has to act like a decoy with the non-citizens hoping he'd be picked..not murdered. Barnum is back and better than ever!

Editor's review:
Cross Over Murders on the one hand is a call back to hard boiled detectives whom everyone knows can do the job, loyal secretaries who really runs the office with beautiful ex-girlfriends who truly love the hard nosed guy and Police Captains who rant and rave but always bring in the private eye to fix the problem. On the other hand, the mystery noir stereotypes are combined with a modern serial killer story with a couple of severe torture scenes and a very topical social twist. It’s an easy read. All the pieces are correctly in place to make this a good story. But it lacks that magic flow where the story reveals the characters without being specifically told each and every move. With all the characters following a very specific noir stereotype (with the exception of the serial killer and his victims), there is very little room for the story to develop. It follows the historic noir path but there is no tension between the main characters - again excepting the serial killer story. In short, I needed a more gritty read and only the serial killer angle gave me that level of emotional response.

A Run Around The Block by Joy Hutchings

Sonia True, divorced but somehow not separated from Terry True, is in a rut. Her family take advantage of her, Terry even expects her to take care of his young son from his second, faltering, marriage. After Terry becomes a national hero he realises that he wants Sonia back and sets out to make it happen, not letting his burgeoning celebrity get in the way. When Terry gets his big chance – appearing on the reality TV show, Definitely Dancing – he seizes the opportunity, hoping it will help him win Sonia back. Can Sonia refuse him in front of Princes William and Harry?

Editor review:
Run around the block is a very entertaining romantic comedy, highly recommended to X-factor fans. Set in the UK, it describes the adventures of a modern English family that becomes famous after the father saves the children from a fire. The writing style is good, however at times the story contains too many unnecessary details and slows the plot. There is also a ghost story that appears towards the end of the book that is not properly resolved; and it doesn’t match up with the general comic tone of the story. Overall this is a “feel good” read for a relaxing day.
